NASHVILLE – Rep. Kevin Brooks, R-Cleveland, says he will be back next year with a plan hitting “super speeders” with hefty fines after the measure crashed in the House Budget Subcommittee this week.
“It hit a wall,” Rep. Brooks said of the measure, which is modeled after a Georgia law already in effect.
The bill, as amended, would have subjected motorists speeding 25 miles per hour above posted limits to fines of up to $500. It was intended to promote safety, Rep. Brooks said, and would have directed the estimated $1.3 million it raised to hospital trauma centers.
But in a tight budget year, it turned into a money fight over where the funds, which some estimated at being as high as $3.7 million, would go, Rep. Brooks said.
House Budget Committee members did not take up the bill earlier this week. Senators passed their version on Thursday but Rep. Brooks said it is dead in the House.
