Phillips: George Clinton docks his funk mothership at Riverbend tonight

Do not attempt to adjust your newspaper. There is nothing wrong. We have taken control to bring you this story. We will return it to you as soon as you are grooving.

Even when aping George Clinton’s address to “the citizens of the universe” during the opening of his landmark funk album “Mothership Connection,” it’s almost impossible not to feel like putting a glide in your stride and a dip in your hip.

Tonight, George Clinton and Parliament/Funkadelic will assemble on the Coke Stage to put on a headlining performance that local fans said they expect to be a memorably entertaining spectacle.

“I was blown away that he was coming,” said Yattie Westfield, who sits behind the drum kit for local reggae band Milele Roots. “I like all of his stuff.

“P-Funk and all that stuff is imbedded in my sound. If it hadn’t been for him and Bootsy Collins … I’d probably be playing country.”
