Magic Tree House reading program begins June 22 at Bachman

Kids can experience wild adventures like exploring the pyramids of Egypt when Bachman Community Center revives the popular Magic Tree House reading program Tuesdays from June 22 through July 27 from 1 to 2:30 p.m.

Bachman librarian Nancy Barber said Mary Pope Osborne’s Magic Tree House books focus on main characters Jack and Annie as they are transported by a magical tree house to far-reaching locales.

“What I love about them is they’re adventure stories. They’re almost like a science or geography lesson and (the kids) are exposed to a lot of new vocabulary,” said Barber, who recommends the series as a bridge between picture and chapter books for elementary-aged readers. “They seem to really grab the kids – once they read one of them, they want to read them all.”

Every Tuesday the program at Bachman begins with the children listening to one of the books read aloud for 30 minutes with each book typically taking two weeks to complete.

“There’s something really special about getting the kids together and reading aloud, experiencing adventure together sitting under the tree outside,” she said.
