Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen today called the formal opening of Alstom’s new Chattanooga plant “a milestone and a very important investment.”

“It’s a global company that had confidence to make this investment,” he told several hundred people who turned out at a dedication ceremony for the $300 million factory.

Philippe Joubert, Alstom Power’s president, said the new Chattanooga plant dramatically enhances Alstom’s ability to build and retrofit power generation equipment.

Mr. Joubert said the turbine manufacturing plant aimed at supplying nuclear industry “represents another important step in executing our clean power strategy.”

The 350,000-square-foot factory on Riverfront Parkway will allow Alstom to make the world’s largest turbines, the company said.
