CLEVELAND, Tenn. – Sylvia Idom is behind the wheel this summer at Red Clay State Historic Area.
Ms. Idom, a seasonal interpretive ranger, is leading demonstrations and workshops on using spinning wheels and spindles.
“When you’ve got your wheel in balance it can be a very soothing and comforting thing,” she said. “There’s a hum that builds up and your minds can just float and wander. … When it works it’s wonderful.”
Ms. Idom said she first took a spinning workshop in 1976 as preparations for America’s bicentennial celebration were under way.
