‘More Than Words’

River Gallery’s artists, featured during March, explore the depths of narrative and the human condition.

“More Than Words,” opening Monday, showcases fiber works by Martha Beadle and clay figures by Becky Gray.

Ms. Beadle considers herself a folk artist who combines her skills in needlepoint and handwork with poetry. She incorporates scraps of fabric, buttons, beads, seashells and dried flowers into wildly colorful and intricate creations. A line of poetry is woven through each piece.

Ms. Gray hand builds figurative sculptures from extrusions, coils and slabs of clay. Having been raku-fired, her pieces have an aged appearance that suggests a ceremonial quality. In contrast to Ms. Beadle’s vibrant fiber creations, Ms. Gray’s sculptures elicit a quiet contemplation of the human experience.

“More Than Words” continues through March 31.
