HAMILTON COUNTY

Debra Anderson

Debra Sue Anderson, 54, of Chattanooga, died on Sunday, March 14, 2010.

She was of the Baptist faith and employed with Life Care Center of East Ridge. She was a person that would help other people even though she was really sick and never complained of anything. She loved her family very much and would always talk about her brothers and her “two boys.” She also loved her nieces and nephews and was very close to Sierra, Anna and Paulie. She always wanted to spend time with her family and never wanted them to worry about her even though she was very sick and ask people to look after her husband after her death. That was just the kind of lovely lady she was.

Survivors include her husband of 20 years, Dewayne Anderson; son, Matthew E. Tinker, of East Ridge; brothers, Mike Smith and Willard Bill Smith, both of Chattanooga along with several nieces and nephews.

Carol Aplin

Carol Granger Aplin passed away Monday, March 15, 2010.

Here’s to Carol. Not the Carol of recent years whose mind failed her, but this one:

The beautiful University of Chattanooga redhead who, before a date, would memorize a list of things to talk about.

Carol the violinist, who played in the Chattanooga Symphony and instructed two generations of offspring in piano.

Carol the beloved teacher, who, with a missionary zeal, carried her GED lesson plans into corporate break rooms, public housing and the Women’s Silverdale Workhouse.

The proud Carol, who researched her and Charles’ family history all over New England and the Midwest. The material she gathered will be cherished by her children and many generations to come.

And here’s to Carol, the glue that held an extended family together. She kept in touch with every distant cousin, presided over her living room filled with tousled heads peeking out of sleeping bags at family gatherings, and refused to speak ill of anyone.

And this Carol: She always had a smile on her face but never understood a joke. She liked things spelled out for her. She swore by McGuffey’s Readers.

Her favorite Bible verse was Philippians 4:8 – “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true … whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report. If there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”

And she did.

Carol’s energy and responsibility as a mother shaped the lives of her children and grandchildren. Her children are: Charles S. Jr. (Jan), Seattle; James G. (Jill), Chattanooga; Jock S. (Jan), Bluegrass, Iowa; Joanne A. Terry (Phil), Chattanooga; and Steven R. (Beverly), Chattanooga.

Her grandchildren are: Eric S. (Stephanie), Seattle; Christy A. Skimming (Mac), Seattle; Benjamin S. (Beth), New York City; Jennifer W. Terry (Josh) Boutwell, Chattanooga; Matthew W., Knoxville; Shannon A. Lee, (David), Murfreesboro; Dana L. Terry, Chattanooga; Brett T. and Calvin W., Chattanooga.

Her great-grandchildren are: Nathan, Sydney, Jordan and Andrew of Seattle; and Susannah of New York City.

Carol’s parents were Herbert Horace and Winifred Stivers Granger. Carol was born in Montgomery, Ala. She married Charles Sewall Aplin from Britton, S.D., and they enjoyed 61 years together. She is survived by one brother, Dr. Herbert Granger (Patricia), of Woodbridge, Va.

A private graveside service will be held by her family.

Donations may go to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 822 Belvoir Ave., Chattanooga TN 37412.

Please share your memories and stories of Carol at www.javerybryan.com.
