As construction crews continue to clear loose rock and debris from U.S. Highway 64 after a Nov. 10 rock slide, state officials are expected to make an announcement today about the road’s reopening.
The road is scheduled to reopen March 31, and Tennessee Department of Transportation Commissioner Gerald Nicely is expected to discuss the ongoing work.
Transportation Department spokeswoman Jennifer Flynn said she could not comment on what would be said in the announcement.
“All I can say is that the contractor has been working as quickly as he can to clear up the slide, and we will not open the highway until we consider it to be safe,” Mrs. Flynn said.
On March 9, crews began working a 24-hour, seven-day schedule to speed up the work and reopen the Polk County road.
