Five tips for pruning roses

Tim Holcomb, owner of Holcomb Garden Center, said the No. 1 question he gets from customers is how to prune the popular Knock Out family of roses.

March is the best time of year to cut back roses, including Knock Out roses, he said. “It won’t kill them. It will make them grow fuller with more blooms.”

Knock Out rose bushes, known for their hardiness and disease resistance, have been around for about a decade, he said.

“The Knock Out rose is popular because it’s so easy to take care of when you plant it in full sun,” he said. “It will bloom from late April to November.”

Now is an excellent time to plant Knock Out roses, Mr. Holcomb said. “The roots will grow, and as soon as spring breaks, they will grown quickly. A light freeze won’t hurt them.”
