MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Alabama Legislature returns from spring break for the final one-third of the 2010 session. One key lawmaker says the closing days will be dominated by three subjects – budgets, gambling and roads.
The Alabama House and Senate resume the session Tuesday. The House Education Appropriations Committee takes up the cash-strapped education budget on Wednesday. That will be the first action on either the education or General Fund budgets. The spending plans must pass in the final 10 days of the session.
House Majority Leader Democrat Ken Guin of Carbon Hill said he expects the priority of lawmakers for the final days will be the budgets, proposals to legalize and regulate electronic bingo and a measure to pump $1 billion into Alabama roads and bridges over 10 years.
