After struggling to regain the success he enjoyed in his first coaching stint with Meigs County’s football program, Stan Eller resigned Tuesday. Eller had coached the Tigers the last two years, compiling a 5-15 record in that time.
“It’s been frustrating,” said Eller, whose overall coaching record is 74-59. “It’s been a struggle and we just haven’t been able to turn things back around, so it’s time for me to move on.
“I still want to coach, but I would probably prefer to be an assistant at this point.”
During Eller’s first term at the Decatur school, 1989-98, he guided the Tigers to a state runner-up finish in 1995 and to the semifinals in 1993. He then worked as an assistant at Soddy-Daisy, Hixson and Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe before returning to Meigs County in 2008.
“We will try to move quickly on this with spring practice just around the corner,” Meigs County principal Clint Baker said. “Having him back was really good for our whole program, and we all wish Stan well wherever he decides to coach next.
“We have several assistants who can oversee workouts right now, and we would like to have a new coach in place by the time we start spring practice (April 1), but the most important thing is getting the right guy.”
