11 role models

Eleven female role models will be honored at the annual UnBought and UnBossed awards breakfast, sponsored by Girls Inc. of Chattanooga, on April 20 at The Chattanoogan.

The awards’ unusual name is a tribute to the spirit of the late Shirley Chisholm, the first black woman to serve in Congress and run for president of the United States, according to a Girls Inc. news release. Ms. Chisholm declared her commitment to serve as a leader who would remain “unbought and unbossed.”

What makes these awards unique is that the honorees are selected by teen girls who participate in Girls Inc.’s activities. A Girls Inc. member will introduce each honoree at the awards ceremony.

“Christina Clark, who selected Ruth Holmberg, picked her because of Ruth’s service with the Red Cross after World War II. Christina is very interested in World War II history,” said Bea Lurie, Girls Inc. president and chief executive officer.

“Shari Balouchi selected Mabel Scruggs because she is known as a person who believes that anything worth doing is worth doing well. That resonated with Shari because it was the same thing her grandfather taught her,” Ms. Lurie said.
