Ruth Millender
Mattie Ruth Millender, 93, departed this life Wednesday, March 24, 2010.
She was born on Sept. 23, 1916, in South Pittsburgh, Tenn. The younger of two children born to the Rev. Emerson Willie Williams and Nancy Ethelene Williams.
As a result of her academic abilities she was advanced several grades and graduated with her brother, David Emerson Williams, from Howard High School in the class of 1933. Ruth later moved to Washington, D.C., and studied at Howard University and worked for several agencies. It was there where she met the love of her life, Dr. J. Spencer Millender, whom she wed in 1946. They remained in Washington and subsequently moved to Chattanooga in 1956 when Dr. Millender opened Millender’s Pharmacy on East Third Street. Ruth worked with her husband in the pharmacy and later took a position at Howard School as secretary to Dr. C.C. Bond before serving as registrar. After obtaining her Bachelor of Science degree in 1961 from Tennessee A&I State University she became a classroom teacher at Howard. She retired from the Chattanooga Public Schools System in 1981.
Ruth and Spencer were avid travelers around the country and blessed to travel to several foreign countries. She enjoyed the use of the “King’s language” and was a passionate member of several local, state and national public-speaking groups including Toastmasters International. Ruth enjoyed other challenges including playing bridge with her many friends. She was also a student and some would say a master of parliamentary procedure holding memberships in several parliamentary organizations.
Ruth was probably best known for her love of music in playing the organ and piano since her early days as a young girl. Since her father was a Methodist minister she often played for many of the churches he pastored around the Southeast and in Washington, D.C. She continued sharing her talents when she and Spencer moved to Chattanooga. Ruth served as church musician at Philip Lutheran Church for more than 50 years. In recognition of her devoted service she received a plaque as the musician and parliamentarian for over 55 years as a member of the Mid-South District-The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. She and her late husband were devoted members of St. Philip Lutheran Church and generously contributed to all programs of the church.
In addition to her other community activities, she was a proud and dedicated member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority where she gained recognition as a Golden Life Member. She was also a past president of the Chattanooga Alumnae Chapter. As the wife of Spencer, Ruth also was a member of the Chattanooga Quettes of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. She also enjoyed her membership in the Key Club while Spencer was a member of the Lock Club.
While she loved living she can now take comfort in knowing she will be reunited with her beloved husband, Spencer.
She is survived by her only blood relative, her brother, David Emerson Williams, of Chattanooga; sister-in-law, Dharathula “Dolly” Millender; nieces, Naomi Millender and Justine M. (Elder James Jr.) Preston, all of Gary, Ind.; and other relatives and friends.
