Calhoun blast probe continues

By Amy Zajac

Two weeks after an explosion vaporized a house in the Saddlebrook subdivision in Calhoun, Ga., investigators still haven’t figured out exactly what happened April 16.

“There is still an investigation going on and officials still believe it was a gas explosion, but exactly what caused the gas to explode is still in question,” said Glenn Allen, spokesman for state Insurance Commissioner John Oxendine.

A spokesman with AGL Resources, the parent company of Atlanta Gas Light and Chattanooga Gas companies, had nothing further to add.

“We’re working very close with state and local officials to determine the cause of the explosion,” said AGL spokesman Alan Chapple. “At this time, we have no additional information.”

The blast was powerful enough to break windows, crack facades and shatter wallboard in about 50 other homes, including 18 that officials have said may be damaged beyond repair. The determination for which houses can be repaired is being left up to the individual insurance companies, Mr. Allen said.

He said the state insurance office has received no complaints about any of the insurance companies involved.

“Most of the calls we’ve received are calls saying, ‘Thank you for coming out to Calhoun to do what you can,'” he said.
