Red Bank squabble continues

Determining who’s in the loop and who’s not continues to be a problem for the Red Bank Board of Commissioners.

This time, the raw feelings focus on a proposed extension to City Hall.

At a commission meeting Tuesday, Red Bank Vice Mayor Monty Millard said a random encounter first alerted him to problems with a proposed floor plan for an extension to City Hall.

The building is in such bad shape, it’s “unacceptable” for government, according to City Manager Chris Dorsey.

Mr. Millard said he ran into city Public Works Director Wayne Hamill at a restaurant before Tuesday’s meeting and Mr. Hamill told him about potential flooding hazards with an extended facility.

At the meeting, Mr. Hamill detailed the problems, referencing a floor plan that shows part of the building about 15 inches below the flood plain.

“This is something I learned about an hour and a half ago,” Mr. Millard said.

But Mr. Dorsey and Mayor Joe Glasscock said the floor plans were available during an agenda session held before the regular meeting.

“That’s what they make ramps for, that’s what they make flood insurance for,” Mr. Glasscock said. “It’s not insurmountable.”

Mr. Dorsey wasn’t so sure, pointing out that building the extension below the flood plain could be in violation of a city ordinance.

The issue remains in limbo, and Mr. Glasscock said the matter would be discussed in two weeks.

Tuesday’s squabble was less contentious than a dispute at the April 20 meeting, during which Mr. Millard criticized his colleagues for failing to tell him and Commissioner Floy Pierce about events.

Mr. Glasscock then accused Mr. Millard of “not paying attention.”

“Nobody’s trying to keep anybody out of the loop,” Mr. Glasscock said at that meeting.
