UT, UGA teams recognized for top APR scores

The University of Tennessee women’s golf and tennis teams and the University of Georgia’s men’s golf and women’s basketball teams were among the programs recognized by the NCAA on Wednesday. They received public recognition for posting a four-year Academic Progress Rate score in the top 10 percent of all teams in their sports.

According to the NCAA, 228 of the 331 schools that play Division I sports had at least one team recognized. The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga was among those that didn’t.

Later this spring the NCAA will release all Division I APR scores, as well as announce the penalties for all the under-performing programs. UTC had several teams punished last year; the football team was banned from the FCS playoffs and hit with scholarship and practice-time reductions.

The Mocs announced in February that the football team will again be eligible for the playoffs next season, while continuing to face scholarship and practice-time reductions.

Ledford advances

Former University of Tennessee at Chattanooga golfer Bryce Ledford advanced from a U.S. Open local qualifier on Wednesday at Holston Hills Country Club in Knoxville.

Matthew Mincer and Grant Miler shared medalist honors with 65s. Ledford, Scott Stallings, Chas Narramore and Todd Burgan each shot 67 to force a playoff. Burgan lost on the first playoff hole which advances Ledford, and the other 67s, to a sectional qualifier.
