Jay & the Techniques, who topped the charts in 1967 with their debut single “Apples, Peaches, Pumpkin Pie,” will bring their bluesy pop sounds to tonight’s Evening Shade Concerts in the Park series in Cleveland, Tenn.
The group formed in Allentown, Pa., when black vocalists Jay Proctor and George “Lucky” Lloyd teamed with an all-white band, making Jay & the Techniques one of the first integrated groups in pop music.
Other Top 40 singles for the group included “Keep the Ball Rolling,” “Strawberry Shortcake” and “I Feel Love Comin’ On.”
Their modern repertoire draws from the classic rhythm & blues and soul music of Motown, Memphis and Philadelphia.
Sound of Tennessee, an award-winning barbershop chorus from Cleveland, is the opening act.
