Train Watching Day set at Dalton tracks

Tri-state model railroaders will have their seventh annual Dalton Crossing Train Watching Day on Saturday. Events start at 10 a.m. at the Freight Depot on Cuyler Street in Dalton, Ga., and nearby tracks.

Members of North Georgia ModuRail, Chattanooga Area Model Railroad Club, Marble Valley and Atlanta chapters of the National Railway Historical Society, Piedmont Division of the National Model Railroad Association and other railroad-related organizations have been invited to take part.

The Freight Depot is a former Southern Railway property now restored and occupied by the Dalton Convention and Visitors Bureau. CSX and NS (Chattanooga-Atlanta) mainlines cross each other at this location, providing many opportunities to watch and photograph trains of each railroad.

“Traffic density of each railroad can be as much as 50 trains per day, making a potential of 100 trains in a 24-hour period,” said event organizers. “You will see regular merchandise freights, unit coal trains, Triple Crown trains, intermodal trains, empty hopper trains and auto rack trains with CSX, NS, UP, BNSF locomotives and sometimes locomotives in surprisingly unique color schemes from other lines, including short lines and regional railroads.”

Cameras, lounge chairs, coolers, scanners and other equipment are welcome.
