Whitfield Schools cuts 113 positions

Whitfield County Schools approved cutting 113 positions on Thursday to offset a $13.4 million shortfall in expected state and local revenue for the 2010-2011 budget year.

Officials said the number of individual staff involved is unclear, but the cuts will affect the system’s support, certified and administrative staffs.

About half of those jobs cuts will come through retirements and resignations, officials said. Some positions were not currently filled but were in the budget.

The jobs cuts will be combined with salary reductions and a reduction in work days and the school calendar to help make up for the revenue shortfall, officials said.
