Whether their focus is flowers, vegetables or both, gardeners are sprucing up their planting areas with whimsical figurines, colorful ornaments, gazing balls, metal sculptures and, yes, pink flamingoes.

Victoria Meek-Underwood, owner of the Insyde Outsyde Shop in Red Bank, said she is seeing a growing interest in garden decor.

“We’ve carried items for the yard or garden since we opened the shop eight years ago,” Mrs. Meek-Underwood said. “And I’ve noticed that year after year, people are buying more and more. In fact, we got in pink metal flamingoes recently, and they sold like crazy, especially around Mother’s Day. People got mad because we sold out. Thankfully, we do have another shipment in.”

When buying yard/garden art, don’t overdo it, according to ezinearticles.com.

“The decorations should never be overdone,” the website notes. “If you want to improve the looks of your yard, one good idea is to first produce a mental picture of what you are going to do.”

Five Tips

1 To enjoy the sights and sounds of nature, look for outdoor decorations such as statues, arbors, fountains, planters, trellises and birdhouses.

2 To enhance a lush yard or garden, antiques and curios work well as ornamentation. Carved wooden chairs, benches and even ancient masks made of plaster look great, especially when they are accented with a trellis.

3 To transform a yard or garden into a personal space, incorporate rock steps, mini houses, gnomes, a centerpiece bench, budding trees and bird feeders.

4 To beautify a small yard or garden, add water features. A fountain, small fishpond or mini replica of a waterfall offers natural charm that makes the size of the space secondary.

5 To better relax or entertain, place an outdoor swing or patio set in a corner. Soften the lines of outdoor furniture with flower beds, trees and potted plants.
