75 grads of training program get oil spill jobs

NEW ORLEANS – Seventy-five graduates of a training program run by environmental justice centers in New Orleans and Atlanta are now working on the Gulf of Mexico oil spill cleanup – a half-dozen of them as supervisors.

Dillard University’s Deep South Center for Environmental Justice and Clark Atlanta University’s Environmental Justice Resource Center have given environmental clean-up courses for 15 years.

Myra Lewis, assistant director of Dillard’s center, says the graduates work for companies cleaning beaches in Alabama, Mississippi and Florida.

Lewis says most were trained in New Orleans or Hattieburg, Miss., but others took classes in Baton Rouge, La., and Atlanta and Savannah, Ga.

Lewis says programs include a 40-hour hazardous waste worker certification that is standard for oil spill cleanup.
