‘Bluegrass Underground’

Eight more acts will venture deep inside Cumberland Caverns in McMinnville, Tenn., this weekend to tape remaining episodes of “Bluegrass Underground.”

Launched in 2008 as a radio concert series on country music’s flagship station, 650 WSM-AM, “Bluegrass Underground” is being developed for national distribution on public television.

Shows originate 333 feet below the ground in the acoustically pure Volcano Room, a 500-seat natural amphitheater carved by water over 3.5 million years. The Volcano Room lies about 600 feet inside the main opening of Cumberland Caverns, a registered U.S. National Natural Landmark.

Concert promoter Todd Mayo calls this musical adventure “one of the most amazing experiences you could imagine.”

Saturday, Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder, Cherryholmes, Mountain Heart and 18 South will present concerts. Sunday will feature Darrell Scott, Justin Townes Earle, Will Hoge and Monte Montgomery.
