Since 1979, Polk County baseball teams by now had packed their bags and turned their thoughts to fishing, swimming or the jobs that would replace their daily academic schedule.
Not so for the 2010 Wildcats, whose coach Bill Triplett is one of the few involved with the program today who remembers 1979 and the school’s last region championship.
Polk will be at home today, weather permitting, to host the first sectional game in the program’s history, meeting Smith County at 5. The forecast called for rain Thursday night and early today.
“I think the last time we won a regional championship was when I was playing,” Triplett said.
While Polk is at home, District 5-AA rival McMinn Central will travel to DeKalb County for a 5:30 game.
