Two men killed in Hixson crash identified

Chattanooga police say two men died this morning at the scene of an early morning crash in Hixson.

Investigators said a pickup truck carrying men crossed the center line at 905 Ely Road at 7:10 a.m. and struck an SUV head on, according to a Chattanooga Police Department news release.

Steve Roper, 34, of Dayton Boulevard, and Michael Haggard, 26, of Hixson, were pronounced dead on the scene, police said. Neither man was wearing a seat belt.

Stephen Welch and his wife Sarah, were in the SUV and were taken to a local hospital with what emergency workers said were non-life-threatening injuries.

No charges are pending.

These are the 10th and 11th fatalities in 2010. And at this time in 2009, Chattanooga had recorded 12 fatalities, police say.
