A Campin’ Jam on Saturday in Fort Payne, Ala., will not only celebrate the 71st anniversary of DeSoto State Park’s dedication but showcase the region’s rich musical heritage.
Featured musician is Tony Thomas, who has been singing songs and telling stories of the Appalachian Mountains for more than 40 years.
All shade-tree musicians are invited to bring their instruments to jam. Arts and crafts vendors will have their wares on display. Events will take place from 5 to 8:30 p.m. CDT in the picnic area across from the Country Store. Seating is limited, so totable chairs are encouraged.
Those attending should allow time to explore the waterfalls and wildflowers of the 3,502-acre park, which was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps. Among its features are a playground, Olympic-size swimming pool, nature center and almost 20 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails.
DeSoto State Park is at 13883 County Road 89 atop Lookout Mountain, eight miles northeast of Fort Payne.
Admission to the Campin’ Jam is free. For more information, call 256-997-5025 or visit www.alapark.com/desotoresort. For more events on Lookout Mountain, visit www.discoverlookoutmountain.com/calendar.shtml.
