Latest ObamaCare ‘surprise’

One of the provisions of the socialized medical reforms that Democrats in Congress passed early this year says that lots of types of preventive medicine for women must now be “free.” And liberals in Congress are interpreting that to mean that birth control is among the things which must be provided to women at no cost.

But whatever you may think of birth control, no mere law can make it “free.” ObamaCare will simply force taxpayers rather than the patients who use birth control to pay the bill.

And that bill may become very high very fast.

A study in St. Louis of thousands of women who were provided contraception found that a big majority chose the most expensive methods of birth control when they did not have to pay for it. Women who foot the bill themselves generally purchase much less costly types of contraception.

That should not come as a surprise to anyone. If government declares a benefit “free,” it is certain that more people will start using that benefit. And if a low-cost benefit and a high-cost benefit are both declared “free,” it is predictable that people will gravitate toward the higher-cost benefit.

That creates horrible inefficiency and waste, not to mention more government debt and the eventual need for higher taxes.

Hooray for all those “free” benefits in ObamaCare!
