Tenley Godfrey admitted that her initial views of the South were somewhat “tainted,” after a stress fracture ended her 2009 cross country season prematurely.
Now that she’s gotten slightly more accustomed — and she’s gained her favorite sport back — she doesn’t want to leave.
The Baylor senior, who finished second in the Division II-AA state meet last week, pledged her commitment to run for the University of Florida, choosing the Southeastern Conference school over the University of Richmond.
“I really thought I clicked with the team,” Godfrey said. “The girls fit my personality — they’re all genuine people — but at the same time they had the intensity and the focus I’m looking for.”
Godfrey’s time of 18:27.06 at Percy Warner Park on Nov. 6 was only behind that of teammate Hannah Jumper. The seniors helped the Lady Red Raiders post a score of 20 points on their way to the Division II-AA state team championship.
“Words can’t describe the feeling this season after the way last year went,” Godfrey said. “It was such a great team, but also a great team dynamic; one that supports and loves each other.
“I’m starting to feel nostalgic just thinking about it.”
Godfrey posted her best two times of the season in her last two meets, won the Powerade Invitational at Moccasin Bend and placed second on three occasions, with her runner-up finish at the Berry Invitational in Rome, Ga., in September “putting her on the radar,” according to coach Heather Ott.
“She was a model of consistency all year,” Ott said. “She didn’t set personal records in every meet, but she ran well in every meet. She has an incredible discipline and focus on running and loves distance running.”
Said Godfrey: “Much of this season’s magnificence I attribute to our superior coaching staff. Coach Ott is one of the top high school coaches in the state, and certainly the best I’ve ever had.
“Now I’m getting the chance to join one of the top running programs in the nation. I couldn’t believe I would get this chance, but this is like a dream school for me, so I’m going after that.”
