2:00 DRILL: More Cam bell

Cam-dal hits another level

The spin cycle of the Cam Newton recruiting saga continues to approach MACH 2.

According to various Internet reports and Twitter feeds, Auburn’s official stance on Newton’s status has changed. What had been an overwhelming, “He’s eligible to play,” has shifted to “No comment,” according to various Websites.

The changing of the verbiage does not mean he will or he won’t play officially. What it does mean is that this story continues to lead into unknown areas.

And something tells me this story has several more turns before Auburn’s kickoff against Georgia on Saturday afternoon.

Cam dominates again

The Google numbers are through the roof on Cam Newton, who has been among the top 20 searches for the better part of the week.

Plus, the overwhelming and overpowering allegations have dwarfed some great story lines this week. Consider the following:

– Trent Richardson is doubtful for Alabama when Mississippi State visits in a game that is unofficially dubbed “We Hate Auburn” bowl.

– Ole Miss quarterback Jeremiah Masoli’s status is unknown when the Rebel Black Bears visit Tennessee.

– Steve Spurrier returns to the Swamp with a chance to make SOuth Carolina history in the venue where he made tons of history as a player and coach with the Gators.

But all of that became background music since the Cam-dal grabbed our attention.

Crazy football numbers

3 – number of times the Atlanta Falcons have started a season 7-2. Remember the Falcons have been playing in the NFL since 1966.

15 – Number of teams in the area playing high school football games tonight.

5 – Number of the area teams ranked in the top four of their various polls: South Pittsburg (No. 2 in Tennessee Class 1A), Signal Mountain (No. 2 in Tennessee Class 2A), Polk County (No. 4 in Tennessee Class 3A), Baylor (No. 4 in Tennessee Division II-AA) and Calhoun (No. 3 in Georgia Class AA).

7 – Number of touchdown passes from Tyler Bray in the four quarters that overlapped from the second half of the Vols’ loss to South Carolina and the first half of the Vols’ whipping of Memphis. Not too shabby, huh?
