2:00 DRILL: MNF reunion

Sports Editor Jay Greeson’s afternoon look at what’s happening now and tonight in the sports world:

Hoops all around

At the 2:00 Drill Compound, the Mrs. and I have two Drill bits, ages 3 and 6 months. I know what you’re asking – So? Well, this morning the house was alive and screaming around 4:45 in the a.m. That made the 24 hours of college hoops that ESPN is trotting out there a much-welcomed solace. Stony Brook and Monmouth at the crack of dawn may not sound like much, but it’s better than Curious Georgia or Calliou that early.

Plus, it whets the appetite for tonight when some big boys – Duke plays 7:30 p.m., Ohio State vs. Florida is at 6 p.m. and the Vols tip at 9:30 p.m. – go at it.

The Doc is in

Roy “Doc” Halladay more than likely will win the NL Cy Young today. For the love of goodness, the Phillies ace delivered two no-hitters – a perfect game during the regular season and only the second postseason no-no in history – 21 wins and top-five finishes in ERA and strikeouts.

There clearly is no other choice.

Halladay’s crowning was just the latest in the award avalanche that is coming. Plus with the GM meetings ongoing and the owners’ meetings on deck look for some big hot stove news in the days ahead.

Are you revved up?

Interest in NASCAR has slumped in recent years. With one race remaining and the point title hanging extremely in the balance – Denny Hamlin holds like a 15-point lead over like 35-time reigning champ Jimmie Johnson – it just doesn’t seem to grab me like other sports stories out there.

Thoughts?
