2:00 drill: Rants and egos

Monday through Friday at 2 p.m., Times Free Press Sports Editor Jay Greeson offers his 2:00 drill – a quick look at what’s happening right now and what’s on tap for tonight in the world of sports. Check back tomorrow morning for five at 10.

Seriously Derek Anderson? Seriously

If your boss is not looking get on the youtubes and check out Arizona quarterback Derek Anderson’s rant after last night’s Monday night football debacle against the San Francisco 49ers.

After being humiliated by their divisional showdown – I know two 3-7 teams are normally not a showdown, but the 49ers’ 27-6 win moves them to within a game of first place – Anderson was asked after the game about laughing on the sideline in the fourth quarter.

Anderson erupted at the question and his tirade will live much longer than any of Anderson’s football legacy. I’m not saying it was a Denny Green “They are who we thought they are,” or even close to Mike Gundy’s “I’m a man, I’m 40,” – two all-time greats, and if your boss is out of the office look them up on the youtubes – but it was entertaining.

Side note: Ever notice that it’s the relative no-name or underachieving quarterbacks that imploded like that. A Ryan Leaf, a Jeff George, a LaMarcus Russell. You don’t see Tom Brady unload a lot of postgame rants like that. Those facts are probably connected, huh?

Rockies get their man

Colorado locked up shortstop Troy Tulowitzki through the 2020 season and will pay him more than $150 million over that period.

First off, $150 million for any baseball player is obscene. Second, the way baseball players’ salaries are going up, by the 2020 season, this will seem like a bargain.

I got in the wrong business.

Two other points of NFL interest

One, 49ers running back Frank Gore cracked his hip in last night’s win over Arizona. Gore, who was accounting for roughly 40 percent of his team’s yards going into last night, will be out for the season. The 49ers’ uphill playoff climb just got a little steeper.

Two, New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees was selected as SI sportsman of the year. I think that’s pretty cool and much-deserved.

Until tomorrow.
