Season’s Greetings!

Our cover story this month features a Chattanooga man who embodies the Christmas spirit of giving all year long. Described as the “holiest man I’ve ever seen” by Rev. Betty Latham of the Church of the Nativity, Ron Fender on any given day may hold a wanderer’s hand, keep vigil at a hospital, and bury the abandoned dead. For this issue, Chatter contributor Kathy Gilbert sat down with Fender-without asking about the meaning of Christmas, or Santa. She didn’t have to; her insightful piece portrays a modern-day St. Nicholas unconcerned about debating the distractions of consumerism. Fender is first and foremost a helper of those in need, reminding us to be kind, to think of our neighbors, and that the smallest gift of happiness is better than none at all.

Chatter’s cover story last month was quite different, highlighting the Christmas shopping season and the beautiful material gifts we give to friends and loved ones. We received many favorable comments about the cover depicting a young Chattanooga woman on a shopping spree, though one reader said it “looks just like all the other covers on national magazines.” This, of course, was a huge compliment for fashion editor Kim Coulter and her professional team of true artists who also contribute greatly to our monthly fashion spreads. Kim credits the exceptional cover to Rodney Hullender of Splash Salon, who styles hair especially for each of her fashion shoots, and also to make-up artist Larry Varnell. Though Kim directs the sessions, photographers Mark Gilliland and David Humber have naturally had much to do with the stunning spreads published during this past year, as does our gifted creative director, Eric Taylor, who brings them to life on these pages.

We hope you like this holiday issue, which includes numerous gift-giving ideas along with tips for cutting your own Christmas tree. We’ve included suggestions for enjoying Christmas dinner at home without lifting a spoon, as well as a stunning spread highlighting a home just renovated in time for the holidays! You’ll also find a feature about a highly entertaining theatrical performance at a small theatre on the campus of Chattanooga State Community College, one we think is a perfect family excursion during the Christmas season!

All of us at Chatter wish you and your loved ones the happiest of holiday seasons, and thank you for spending time with us again this month!
