Man badly injured in beating

Police are seeking information on an assault that has left a Taft Avenue man clinging to life, according to department spokeswoman Sgt. Jerri Weary.

David Chatman, 44, stumbled into his father’s house at 1015 Taft Ave. around 6:30 p.m. today and told his father that he’d been assaulted and shortly later lost consciousness.

Chatman appeared to have been cut on the head and face and was immediately taken to a local hospital where he was placed on a ventilator, Weary said. Hospital staff found that Chatman had not in fact been cut or stabbed but had suffered serious blunt force trauma to his head and neck, she said.

Chatman’s father told police didn’t know where his son was assaulted nor whom he may have been with at the time of the assault. Because of Chatman’s condition police weren’t able to speak with him to get details of what may have happened.
