Fire on spruce damages two homes

A fire on Spruce Street destroyed one home and damaged another, said Bruce Garner with the Chattanooga Fire Department.

Around 3 p.m. Charles Williams was working on his car in his mother’s driveway at 511 Spruce St. when the engine caught on fire, Williams said.

There were no injuries, Garner said.

Because the homes were built close together, flames spread quickly from the car to both houses, destroying a neighboring home at 501 Spruce St., Garner said.

Although the fire is under control, Bailey Avenue is still closed from Holtzclaw Avenue to Central Avenue, Garner said.
