Gun found; Baylor student dismissed

A Baylor School student was “dismissed” after bringing an unloaded firearm to campus Friday, school officials said.

Late Friday evening, school President Scott Wilson sent a letter to Baylor parents, telling them about “a situation that occurred on campus this afternoon.”

Wilson said that, after learning that a student had the firearm, officials located the student and confiscated the weapon.

“Law enforcement officials were immediately notified, and the student has been dismissed,” Wilson said in the letter.

In the letter, Wilson did not say what type of firearm the student was carrying or what grade the student was in.

Chattanooga police spokeswoman Sgt. Jerri Weary said in a statement Saturday another student reported to school administrators that a 17-year-old had a gun. Police were called, and the administrators went to find the boy. He ran into the men’s locker room, where he was cornered and detained, Weary said.

The school officials retraced his steps and found the handgun on the floor of the locker room. They also found marijuana, Weary said. The boy was arrested on firearms and drug charges, she said.

Weary said the youth was taken to the Juvenile Detention Center.
