Chattanooga State Community College developmental writing teacher Sharron Lucas is taking on a second role as the new pastor for family life at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hixson.

“It is a blessing and a holy privilege to be able to work with youth,” said Lucas. “With God all things are possible and I want to solidify prayer as relevant to their lives.”

Aside from prayer, Lucas plans to take her love of filmmaking to the next level by taking youth to movies and then analyzing them theologically together as a group. The first movie she plans to take the youth to see is “Flipped” by Rob Reiner, about two eighth-graders that begin to have feelings for one another despite being total opposites.

“I will try to make sure they are able to think and talk theologically using real life applications,” said Lucas. “Most youth want to do service and make a difference in the world, but they want it to be relevant. Teens are pretty amazing when they are allowed to rise to their full potential.”

Lucas will also be teaching Sunday school at 9:45 a.m. to children age 2 through fifth grade using the Bible Song curriculum. The lessons utilize songs in country, rap, rock and jazz to teach Bible verses to children.

The idea of Bible Song is to help parents teach their children about the Bible at home too. Lucas will send Bible Song writing journals home with the participants so they can record their feelings each week to share with the class on Sundays.

“We are redesigning the whole family program at Trinity,” said Lucas. “We are trying to give parents tools to use at home because that is where faith formation takes deep root.”

About Lucas

• Lucas began working in ministry about four years ago after graduating from Lutheran Theological Seminary. She said her interest in ministry began while teaching English for 10 years at Baylor School. In her first appointment in Sheyenne, N.D., she served for three and a half years as pastor for four churches in a cooperative. Through a Northwest Area Foundation Grant for community revitalization she, along with church youth, turned an old school building into a community center and rustic lodge. Lucas said she decided to come home to North Chattanooga in 2010 because her father needed her help after surgery.

• Lucas is a graduate of Tyner High School and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in music and a Masters Degree in English. She took filmmaking courses at New York University.
