The Chattanooga State baseball team has been adept at taking what it wanted, but visiting Walters State turned the tables Monday as the host Tigers gave more than they got.
“We have been doing that to others,” Tigers assistant coach Joe Wingate said. “In the three years I have been here, this is the first time we have done that.”
Nationally eighth-ranked Walters State pushed across a two-out, two-strike run in the top of the 10th inning and held on for an 8-7 win Monday afternoon, making the Senators the first team this year to take a series from the No. 2 Tigers. The teams had split Sunday’s doubleheader.
What Chattanooga State has done to others so well – take advantage of walks, hit batsmen, errors and a timely hit or two – the Senators did Monday. Though outhit 12-5, they made use of five hit batsmen and seven walks and came from behind twice.
“We came up short. We had a couple of opportunities. We didn’t take advantage and they did,” Tigers coach Greg Dennis said.
