Does Belgium have a future?

“There’ll always be an England,” they say, but Belgium’s future is less certain. It isn’t hot news this side of the Atlantic, but the little European country has not had an elected government for more than a year.

So Belgium’s King Albert II recently implored his country’s French- and Dutch-speaking peoples to set aside their feuding and the very serious, ongoing talk of dividing up the country.

The king banged the table during a national address, saying, according to London’s Telegraph newspaper, “I would have liked to enjoy with you the swearing in of a new government. Alas, we are not there yet, and I deplore this.”

He even called voters “ignorant” after elections showed considerable support for those who want to split Belgium in two.

So will there always be a Belgium? Stay tuned.
