Defend freedom of conscience on abortion

A federal law properly forbids hospitals that receive U.S. tax dollars to force workers to assist with abortions.

So it was alarming when a dozen nurses at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey – which gets millions of federal dollars annually – filed suit recently, saying they had been required to take part in abortions as part of their training.

The nurses had objected to the training on religious grounds, but they said they were threatened with being fired if they did not take part.

Fortunately, a federal judge issued a restraining order, saying the hospital could not force the nurses to participate in abortions. The hospital has said it will now hire other workers to perform abortions.

While we believe that abortion is abhorrent and never should have been imposed as a “right” by the U.S. Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision, it is obviously appropriate at a minimum to protect medical workers who object to abortion from having to perform that horrible procedure.
