THINGS I WISH MY KIDS WOULD ASK ME

Editor’s note: Barry Courter has a 22-year-old son who recently graduated from college and an 18-year-old daughter who is a senior in high school.

Q: Dad, I’ve heard some of the my friends over the years say things like, “I’ll get serious in high school,” or “I’ll get serious in college.” Have you ever actually known anybody who eventually did get serious?

A: Yes, but usually only after a major, traumatic event, like marriage, or the birth of a child, or a stint in prison. In general, people who say they will put off getting serious about life until some major milestone occurs usually get their wish, but not in the way they think. It’s better to handle your business all the time.
