Lady Mocs seek to avoid early tip

Whitney Hood doesn’t want to get up before the sun next Saturday.

To avoid playing in one of the dreaded 9 a.m. Southern Conference women’s basketball tournament games, which would lead to a very early wake-up call, Hood and her University of Tennessee at Chattanooga teammates need to wrap up their regular season today with a win at Western Carolina.

A win or an Elon loss would guarantee UTC (15-13, 12-7) a third-place finish in the league. The No. 3 seed will play its first tournament game 30 minutes after the 9 a.m. matchup between the Nos. 4 and 5 seeds – around the more reasonable time of 11:15.

“If we can get out of that, hopefully we will, because I don’t really want to play [at 9],” said Hood, who has been the SoCon’s leading scorer (19.3 ppg) all season. “I’ve never played a game that early.”

WCU’s Catamounts (8-20, 6-13) are 10th in the standings but have won two of their last three games.
