Fugitive shoots self in Whitfield County

DALTON, Ga. – A North Carolina man suspected of killing his wife early Friday fled to Whitfield County and shot himself to death as deputies closed in, authorities said.

Whitfield County authorities believe John Fred Stanley, 42, shot himself with the same gun that was used to shoot his estranged wife outside her workplace, according to a news release.

North Carolina authorities notified Whitfield County that Stanley might have fled to Georgia in a Honda Accord after the shooting and might be staying on Fannie Street.

Capt. Rick Swiney of the Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office said two deputies noticed a similar car outside a home on Fannie Street and stopped to investigate.

Swiney said a man ran out the back door of the home, across a field and into some woods off Old Rome Road, where he shot himself as the officers approached.
