Mocs’ ‘Big D’ seeing double

DeAntre Jefferson put a defender on his back, caught a pass on the low block, then suddenly had another defender on him.

Austin Peay decided to double-team the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga center Monday night.

It was a first for any Mocs post player in the last two seasons. Nicchaeus Doaks and Khalil Hartwell of the 2009 Southern Conference championship team were the last ones opponents commonly defended with two players.

“It threw me off a little bit,” Jefferson said. “It was very interesting, and it changed the whole game. I don’t think we’ve played a team where they doubled on the post. It threw everybody off on the first play; then we did OK but didn’t hit shots out of it.”

As the Mocs head into the heart of their Southern Conference season, beginning Saturday at UNC Greensboro, Jefferson could see SoCon schools following suit by double-teaming the senior.
