The Bradley Central wrestling meet at Cleveland High scheduled for Thursday night was postponed and rescheduled for Jan. 24 at 7 p.m.
Bradley’s Bears, who won Soddy-Daisy’s invitational last weekend, are unbeaten this season while the Blue Raiders are 12-3 with all three losses coming against Soddy-Daisy — at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga’s old-timers duals, the Cleveland Duals and a regular-season dual meet at Soddy-Daisy last week.
Baylor and McCallie are the only area wrestling teams that will be participating in tournaments this weekend. Baylor’s Red Raiders planned to leave this morning for Johnson City and Science Hill’s Fandetti Brawl, according to coach Ben Nelson. McCallie was scheduled to participate in the Grissom Duals at Huntsville and will still send a junior varsity team there, but the varsity will be competing in the Brentwood Invitational.
Soddy-Daisy was entered in the Fandetti Brawl, but Trojans coach Steve Henry canceled that trip. Ooltewah and Red Bank also backed out of trips to the Brentwood Invitational.
“We wanted to go. We need to wrestle even though some of the guys might not have been at the proper weights,” Ooltewah coach Wendell Weathers said. “We feel it’s best, though, after talking with our administration and folks at the central office, to stay at home.”
Red Bank coach Ben Reichel said his team needed to go because the Lions lost four dual meets including a key district matchup with East Ridge.
“It would have been good to get the matches and to see wrestlers from the midstate area,” Reichel said, “but it’s out of our hands.”
Weathers’ Owls were scheduled to wrestle Soddy-Daisy is a key district match Thursday, but that was postponed also. It hasn’t yet been rescheduled.
Cleveland and Central joined most of the other area schools in canceling their trips.
And in Georgia, the state duals championships scheduled for this weekend were postponed. Those duals had been scheduled for the Macon Metroplex, but a notice on the GHSA website says the tournaments will be held Feb. 25-26 but will not be at a central site.
Price has surgery
Signal Mountain football coach Bill Price underwent shoulder surgery to start the new year, but he insists he did not suffer the injury from pressing the team’s state championship trophy.
He’s still wearing a sling, but he has gotten used to those. This was his fifth shoulder operation.
“I didn’t like missing three days of school, but wearing the sling is nothing. I’m ready to go,” he said.
