Leber: There are always strings attached

In the romantic (not really) comedy (eh) “No Strings Attached,” Natalie Portman plays a cute, commitment-phobic doctor and Ashton Kutcher plays, well, Ashton Kutcher. Their characters are friends who decide to become sex friends. Blah, blah, infatuation. Blah, blah, heartache. Blah, blah, they end up together in the end.

Oh, wait. You’re shocked. I’ve ruined mediocre romantic comedy for you. You had no idea. You also have no idea how “Friends With Benefits,” starring Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake, will end.

But really, if there’s anyone out there who knows of an ongoing bed-buddies arrangement, in the movies or in life, that has ended in anything other than: a) romance; b) awkwardness and pain; or c) death, please call me. Sure, in theory I can see the benefits, but in reality, “it’s complicated” doesn’t begin to cover it.

My friend Aggie said she thinks having a sexual relationship without an emotional attachment is impossible.

“I can’t imagine wanting to routinely sleep with someone I didn’t like enough to consider dating,” she said. “Nor can I imagine enjoying sleeping routinely with someone that I liked enough to consider dating but knew didn’t want more from me.”
