Gun enthusiasts safe, proficient

I resent your recent anti-gun cartoon maligning gun stores and honest citizen gun ownership. Gun regulations/restrictions often cost lives of innocent people. The shooting in Arizona is inexcusable, but fanatical individuals determined to hurt others always find the means to accomplish their wicked acts, be it a knife, bomb or gun. Anti-gun people often take advantage of sad situations to promote their agendas.

More crime and violence occurs when honest citizens are denied their rights to protect themselves. University of Chicago Law School fellow John R. Lott has done exhaustive studies on gun ownership. His findings indicate that gun-control laws make it difficult for the public to acquire firearms. For every 1 percent decline in private gun ownership, the crime rate increases 3 percent.

His statistics calculate that private gun ownership prevents some 1.2 million crimes annually. Even those who criticize his statistical methods concede the minimum number of crimes prevented may be 600,000, not an insignificant figure in itself.

I resent the implication of the cartoon you published. Gun enthusiasts invest their time, money and effort to be safe and proficient with their firearms. There are many examples of people saving others because they were armed and skilled.
