With U.S. troops necessarily living and working in close quarters, homosexuality in the military long has been a difficult issue.
In many cases, the policy has been to dodge the subject: “Don’t ask, don’t tell.” But openly homosexual individuals were excluded from service.
However, a federal appeals court has now ordered the government immediately to stop enforcement of the ban against openly homosexual members of the military. Congress recently repealed the ban, but the repeal hadn’t yet taken effect.
There should be no desire to mistreat anyone. But Congress and the courts are ignoring problems related to close living conditions and possibly serious personal and morale problems in our military.
