Hard-to-explain atrocities

We in the United States need to remember every day our many blessings of freedom and life. But even in our wonderful country, we are confronted with all too many examples of crimes of vicious inhumanity among our people.

On one page of Thursday’s Times Free Press, there were accounts of two separate atrocities:

• In New York, an 8-year-old boy lost his way walking home. He asked a stranger for directions and, according to authorities, the man killed the boy. He allegedly dismembered the body and placed the victim’s body parts in a refrigerator and a trash bin.

• Across the nation, in Westminster, Calif., a woman was charged with sexually mutilating her estranged husband, and putting part of his body in a kitchen disposal.

Even though we sadly are aware that our world is afflicted with tragic wars and psychopathic individuals, it is nevertheless difficult for us to understand instances, such as these, of gross inhumanity.
