It is obvious that dangerous situations can be created by people who are addicted to talking on their cell phones while they attempt – often poorly – to drive.
But now there is a somewhat tentative warning that there may be a cancer danger to people who use cell phones.
The warning has come from the World Health Organization, which suggests cell phones are “possibly carcinogenic.”
WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer panel has involved 31 scientists from 14 countries. They see a potential risk, though they emphasize that there is no clear evidence of a cancer danger.
Could the weak electromagnetic radiation from cell phones held close to the ear, and thus close to the brain, be enough to have some kind of effect? That seems unlikely, so it “remains an open question” what the link could be, said one noted scientist involved in the research. But another deemed the issue serious enough to declare, “This is left to the individual consumer to make a decision about whether the current level of evidence is strong enough” to justify precautions.
