Lookout trails part of Great Eastern Trail

The National Park Service and the Great Eastern Trail Association on Thursday announced the designation of 8.1 miles of Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park trails on Lookout Mountain as a segment of the Great Eastern Trail.

The Great Eastern Trail is designed to be a western alternative to the Appalachian Trail. It passes through parts of nine states between the southern end of the Appalachian Mountains in Alabama and the Finger Lake Trail in New York. A portion of the trail will be routed through the Chattanooga area.

This 8.1-mile segment is part of a route from the Georgia Pinhoti Trail to the Cumberland Trail.

The formal signing of a memorandum of understanding creating this designation will take place at Cravens House on Lookout Mountain on June 27 at 10:30 a.m., according to a news release.
