We occasionally have some very fine, and some even great, leaders in Congress. We also have members of Congress who are adequate.
But when “the people” elect 435 representatives and 100 senators, sometimes we don’t handle that responsibility especially well.
Nowhere has that been more evident lately than in the lewd behavior of married U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner, D-N.Y.
So it is fortunate that the recent publicity surrounding his actions has at last prompted him to make one of his better decisions: He has announced his resignation from Congress.
There is no joy for him in such a decision, and neither should his political enemies take pleasure in this ugly situation.
